Rest & Restore Protocol (RRP)

A sound-based, nervous-system-informed approach to deep regulation, rest, and recovery.

The Rest & Restore Protocol (RRP) is a gentle, evidence-informed listening intervention designed to support nervous system regulation and help the body move out of prolonged stress states. This protocol is especially supportive for individuals experiencing chronic stress, burnout, anxiety, trauma-related patterns, or difficulty settling into rest.

RRP focuses on creating the internal conditions for restoration — supporting the body’s ability to slow down, recalibrate, and recover.

What Is the Rest & Restore Protocol?

The Rest & Restore Protocol is a sound-based therapeutic listening program developed from principles of behavioral neuroscience and Polyvagal Theory. It uses specially designed soundscapes delivered through headphones to support the autonomic nervous system — the system responsible for regulating stress responses, rest, digestion, and recovery.

Unlike talk therapy, RRP does not require processing experiences verbally. Instead, it works at a physiological level, supporting regulation through carefully structured auditory input.

How RRP Works

RRP uses engineered soundscapes designed to reflect natural biological rhythms such as breathing, heart rate, and digestive cycles. These rhythms help cue the nervous system toward states associated with safety, calm, and restoration.

Listening sessions are completed gradually and at a pace tailored to your nervous system. The experience is passive — there is nothing you need to do beyond listening and noticing your body’s responses.

Many people find this approach supportive when traditional coping strategies or insight-based work alone hasn’t fully addressed ongoing nervous-system activation.

Who May Benefit from RRP

The Rest & Restore Protocol may be helpful for adults who experience:

  • Chronic stress or nervous-system overwhelm

  • Burnout or emotional exhaustion

  • Anxiety or persistent internal tension

  • Difficulty relaxing or settling into rest

  • Sleep challenges related to stress

  • Trauma-related nervous-system patterns

  • A sense of being “stuck in high alert”

RRP is not a standalone therapy, but rather a complementary support that can enhance other therapeutic work by helping the body access states of regulation more readily.

What to Expect

When working with RRP at Meadowlark Integrative Wellness:

  • We will first discuss your goals, history, and nervous-system patterns to determine whether RRP feels like a good fit.

  • The protocol is typically completed across multiple listening sessions, totaling approximately five hours.

  • Sessions may take place in person or remotely, depending on your needs and preferences.

  • Listening is done in a calm, supportive environment, with pacing adjusted based on how your nervous system responds.

Some people notice subtle shifts, such as feeling calmer, more grounded, or more able to rest. Others notice changes gradually over time. Experiences vary, and there is no “right” response.

How RRP Fits with Therapy

Rest & Restore Protocol is often used alongside individual therapy or integrative mental health work. By supporting regulation at the nervous-system level, RRP can make emotional processing, insight, and skill-building feel more accessible.

This approach helps create a physiological foundation that supports deeper therapeutic work — without requiring effort, analysis, or verbal processing during the listening itself.
